21:00 Portrait Trilok Gurtu Percussive Movements
Audience favorite, innovator and #1World Percussionist (according to Down Beat's '96 Poll), Trilok Gurtu is returning as our guest for three successive evenings. Instead of the standard bass drum, I play the baya, the bass drum of the Tabla, the Indian musician has explained. Through this special construction, it is possible to simultaneously play drums, percussion and produce other sound. Gurtu, who visited Europe for the first time in 1973, reached a musical high in trio with John McLaughlin, but can also draw on the wide range of experience he accumulated alongside Barre Phillips, Archie Shepp, Gil Evans, Oregon and Richard Teitelbaum to give his work a broad musical base. Son of the celebrated Indian singer Shobba, Gurtu will be joining forces this time
with Klangforum drummer Charly Fischer. In addition, he will provide accompaniment for two female dancers and animate the shooting stars Albin Janoska, Martin Siewert and Conny Giese... Last but not least, he'll be working with Wolfgang Puschnig who, as Austria's world music expert, is central to this scene. Total percussion!

24:00 PianoNightLine Markus Minarik Trio
M.M., who normally mans the keyboard in other clubs around town, is paying a visit to the "Lion's Den" to demonstrate that a bar is not simply a bar and a piano not simply a piano... and that the midnight hour is an ideal time of day for the intimate interaction of a piano trio!
