I give everyone the right to respond to the current state of our world - as created by engineering and economic "brains" - by developing a severe case of alcoholism, if they can just get enough to get drunk on. To destroy others and yourself by this means is an understandable and fully excusable reaction. Whoever doesn't get drunk today, can claim a notable and voluntary achievement.
Heimito von Doderer
Angelika Riedl has not responded to the current state of our world "nobly", by developing a severe case of alcoholism... Her chosen means of response is the Nudelholz ("rolling pin" or in genteel terms, bassoon), in the classic sense of the weapon brandished by a farmer wife who is waiting behind the door for her drunken husband to come staggering home. The Nudelholz, which is also known as the Dulcian and which belongs to the mafiosi family of Aerophones, is played sensually/indecently by blowing into its long wooden body lined with fine lamella to make the free ends of these delicate slats tremble against each other. The Nudelholz in question is
formed by two parallel maplewood pipes with 22-24 wide-mouth keys and six worn-out finger holes. During the Nadelbalz (Nadel = pine needle + balz = mating ritual) in the alcoholic backwoods of Tirol, this usually tame instrument reiterates the call of the soused and horny "bucks" chasing after FraŸleins. It follows that the literature for this intemperate instrument is steeped in Buck and Balz frivolity. But when the keys and fingerholes are wielded by a virtuoso like Angelika Riedl, the common Nudelholz develops rapidly from a producer of pinewood mating calls to a "sweetwood" in the world of art & pain. Anyone encountering the
prototypical Nudelholz would have hollered "Oh Gott!". But when Angelika Riedl blows magic into the two maple pipes, the cry from rapt listeners will certainly be "Bassoon!". Keep in mind: Whoever prefers to stay sober & play or listen to the bassoon can claim a notable (and voluntary) achievement. Welcome!
