21:00 Session The Archie Shepp Songbook by Christian Bachner

Bachner, the quietest one, deserves some special notice. His unadorned playing -- which, in the tradition of Joe Lovanos, keeps emotion under strict control -- already sounds lucid and mature. In taking up the music of Archie Shepp, Bachner must come to terms with the "antipodes" of Shepp's style, which began in the rhythm & blues mode, then aligned itself with the black power movement and free jazz before immediately veering off again. Shepp always created a commotion with his strong character and expressive playing! It's possible that Christian Bachner will approach Shepp's work with somewhat more of a distance.
