While living in London I had an apartment with a small garden. During the summer around 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning, just as the day began, birds would gather here one by one and sing together, each declaring its freedom in song. It is my wish to share this same spirit with other musicians and communicate it to the people. David Holland
Dave Holland, born in 1946 in Wolverhampton, England, was taken on by Miles Davis in 1968 as Ron Carter's successor in his quintet. The bassist then stayed on with the Miles Davis group until the end of 1971, participating in all of the notable recordings of the jazz "voodoo master" made during this period, from "Filles De Kilimanjaro" to "Live at the Fillmore East". "Conference of the Birds", recorded in 1972, was the first album he cut under his own name and marked the beginning of his long-standing, self-innovating musical development. With his instrument, he tried to influence, broaden or change the sound color of the other
instruments, Holland explained. The both technically and musically brilliant bassist put this theory into practice with such different partners as Jan Garbarek, Lol Coxhill, Lee Konitz, Steve Coleman, Joe Henderson, John Surman, John McLaughlin, Derek Bailey, Franco Ambrosetti, Tomasz Stanko, Chick Corea, Kenny Barron, Karl Berger, Jack DeJohnette, Barre Phillips, Craig Harris...
A tribute to an extraordinary creative integration figure in modern jazz and heartfelt "thanks" to the long and deeply engaged pedagogue: Dave Holland.
