21:00 Lew Soloff's Food Group USA

The common denominator of this All-Star line-up is Gil Evans. Lew Soloff has worked on and off for nearly thirty years with the orchestral grandmaster. Joe Beck was the first guitarist Miles Davis ever took for his bands, on the recommendation of samba-fan Evans in whose group Beck played in the mid-60s. The rhythm section is the one from the legendary Monday Night Orchestra, which used to play weekly in New York's Sweet Basil. Miles Davis took saxophonist Evans out of high school to join his Comeback band in 1980 (We want Miles). Otherwise he has no connection to Gil or the pianist of the same name.

Food Group, incidentally, is the first ensemble formed by this entertaining virtuoso trumpeter who in the late 60s helped to dissolve the barrier between rock and jazz with Blood, Sweat & Tears. Fusion will probably serve as a stylistic label for this band also. CH
