For the sixth and last time, the VAO is appearing in stage band formation - with the new 1997 line-up (minus
vocalist Urszula Dudziak) - and the 1995 Tour Program.
"Dolphy is too hard for you (VAO)", music critic Reno Barth said in Die Presse : When Dolphy's band played,
they only got it "almost right", Dolphy himself claimed. A Big Band has to play tight - but in the process this
music loses much of its flow and teeters on the edge of becoming almost unpleasantly neat and prim. And then
there are the technical difficulties. (Reno Barth, Die Presse, Oct.95)
We thank Reno Barth for his advice. We've been practicing specially for him... and we can handle this now! MR

Portrait Sheila Jordan
This Portrait is devoted to Sheila Jordan, the white Scat Legend from Detroit, who grew up in the milieu that
produced most of the great jazz musicians, from Lennie Tristano to Charlie Parker. Jordan experienced all the
highs and lows of this life. Whoever wants to learn more about her experiences can have a look at the fine
accompanying documentation. And whoever wants to know why so many top-notch female vocalists have
suddenly surfaced in Austria should make a point of attending this evening, when Sheila will present some of the
(professional) offspring. Two pianists will share the spotlight: Fritz Pauer, who has already been mentioned, and
Steve Kuhn, who we're happy to be meeting for the first time. Vive Le Scat! MR
