I shoot the ********* a fierce look but he just stretches out under the
***** piano and turns his cassette recorder on to record everything. When
he's finally finished, we're already three-quarters of the way through the
piece and he still hasn't played anything. That's why the piano's missing
on so many live-recordings. Miles Davis
Herbie Hancock -- universal master of sound, resident of many parallel
musical worlds & present orchestrator of musical crash-landings -- defined
the headhunter's funk energy as the sum of contrapuntal riff-layering and
constant repetition. Chameleon or Sly: a battle of riffs between the bass,
guitar and keyboard, repeated over&over again, first to your delight, then
over&over some more, until you eventually dry up by virtue of this
commercially-successful revolution, with its stylized dance music, which
has not managed to break away from the psychedelically-vague spirit of the
early 1970s.. (LT)
