Stylistically, Marty Ehrlich is not only an exceptionally flexible musician's musician (as documented on over 70 CDs, with Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Jack DeJohnette, Chico Hamilton, Myra Melford and John Zorn, among others). In recent years he has also established himself as a composer and as the leader of his own ensembles, rounding out his image as one of the rare "complete" musicians, in both the technical and intellectual sense. The chorus of international critics is unanimous in its praise of this melodic reeds player, who gained the necessary theoretical equipment at the side of Jaki Byard, Gunther Schuller and George Russell: He has been referred to variously as "The most formidable multi-instrumentalist since Eric Dolphy", (Village Voice) and "One of his generation's most original thinkers" (The Nation). Unlike his frequent partner John Zorn, Ehrlich distrusts large, spectacular gestures and shocking performance. Despite of all of his technical refinement, and faced with the most deucedly interwoven metric and harmonic intricacies, Ehrlich espouses a type of understatement, reminiscent of chamber music yet which never smacks of coquetterie. "If the public has the feeling they're only getting virtuosity from me, then I have failed," he has said (paraphrased). Ehrlich's name in German means "honest" and in his case, it applies: At present, his musical sincerity has manifested itself in his choice of his current musical partners, who despite all of their fine references (For bassist Michael Formanek: Tim Berne, Freddie Hubbard, Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer. For drummer Peter Erskine: Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Weather Report, Michael Brecker) tend to steer away from exhibitionist handiwork and lean towards reductionism and the creation of atmospheric density.
For Fan-Gear Fans: Ehrlich shirts are on sale at the Hofer supermarket for ATS 99.90 ( no exchanges/no returns and only available upon presentation of a valid gun permit)... Honest!
