21:00 Sigi Finkel Powerstation

As composer and leader of acoustic groups, Sigi Finkel sets up the framework for free-swinging organized music rather in the spirit of a mid-60s Miles Davis concept with its heavy debt paid to Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. With Powerstation, however, he has also started to pursue electric, fusion-oriented concepts. This is the situation, according to the latest edition of the Ro-Ro-Ro Jazz Lexicon. But Powerstation can also be viewed as another step in the direction of Miles since the Davis' free-swinging phase was followed by an electric period, with Zawinul, Hancock, Jarrett and Corea on keyboards, synthesizers and Fender; with Rhodes, Dave Holland or Michael Henderson on bass; and with Jack DeJohnette, Al Foster and Billy Cobham on drums. Sigi Finkel is one of Austria's Wayne Shorters (what a rich land!?). About his band he has said: Through my experience as a leader, I've come to realize that you can use a band quasi as an extended instrumental arm, either thanks to the compositorial concept that serves as its basis or due to your choice of participating musicians. This means that, as conceptualist, you can use the band as a sort of personal megaphone. Tonight Powerstation will present both the tried&true plus some new compositions. Exciting! CH
