EDIT ORIA L

What exactly is an editorial? Checking out the definition in any dictionary -- foreign language, etymologicial or ordinary -- quickly proves to be a waste to time. Usually it's just identified as an adjective pertaining to an editor or editors or as an article in which opinions are expressed by the said editor(s). Or by their publishers. A nd these articles appear in publications, that is to say in the written word, although the ending "orial" sounds much like "oral" and editorials can also appear in other media... but enough of all that. For our purposes, we can amplify the definition to read like this... Editorial:

  1. An overview of the contents (as quasi-competition to the table of contents, which doesn't exist here)
  2. Explanation for better understanding of the contents
  3. Global remarks on the possible use of the written contents
  4. Commentary by the authors
  5. Expressions of thanks
  6. Future perspective
  7. Retrospective
  8. Present context

Stop - before the listing of more such points makes readers turn limp with boredom.

In addition, we are currently working on a global monthly program of jazz events (in the widest sense). The calendar is quite modest for this month, but practically every single events' organizer has been contacted and the majority have expressed interest in being represented, although at present, many do not feel they have suitable concerts for our listing or prefer to wait and see how the calendar will develop. (Scepticism runs high, as we all know, in the jazz field.) With time, we hope everyone will understand that this project is meant to provide a service and that it has no ulterior political or cultural motives.

As for the music: Who could possibly offer a better kick-off for the New Year than Sir Karl Ratzer? Hardly anyone and that's why he's been invited to provide the jazz follow-up to our 1997 New Year's Concert.

Now, systematically, on to an unsystematic listing:

add 1) Herewith we present the February 1997 folder of the Jazz & Music Club Porgy & Bess. Scroll upwards and you will find a listing of dates followed by the name of the band which you can come to hear/see/admire on that day.

add 2) This time, the texts by RD are polemical. Those by MR should not be taken literally and certainly not seriously. CH's texts are true to form (CH's form) and thanks to the efforts of some diligent proofreaders, relatively free of spelling &/or typographical errors this time.WL has been invited in as this month's guest commentator which means that we decline all responsibility for the contents and correctness of his texts.

add 3) Reader Type I: Systematic - Read all texts through chronologically, from beginning to end.
Reader Type II: Specialist - If the names of any bands catch your attention, scroll down to the indicated date to find out more about them.
Reader Type III: Chaotic - If you count among the chaotic, then choose any text at random... and come hear a concert you've read nothing about.
Reader Type IV: Friend of the author - At the end of each text you will find the writer's initials and a legend giving the full names at the end of the program.
Reader Type V: Collector - Download this program and file it with all the other monthly programs of P&B.
Reader Type VI: Philanthropical Supporter - Check if your logo is present among those of our most honorable sponsors. If not, call the hotline we have set up to handle such cases, at 0664/1004425, every 2nd Sunday from 5:15-6:30.

add 4) This Editorial was written in half-presence of mind on 15.1.97 between 16:30 and 17:15 in Cafe Lux in Vienna's 7th district (unfortunately no new sponsors to be found... here you're more likely only to find spongers), while sitting over a cup of fruit tea (F-f brand... waiting for a break in the rain).

add 5) Our thanks to all the relatives of the editorial staff, the participating musicians and others without whom this program wouldn't have been made possible - but to nobody else.

add 6) We will end this season on 2 May 1997 with a project with the working title Social Studies, in which everyone who works at P&B can have his/her (musical) say. The 97/98 Season begins on Friday, 12 September. An advance notice for all musicians who'd like to participate: The next free date is 31 March 1999.

add 7) We're negotiating with all of Austria's music conservatories and academies to launch a special project which will focus on "First Aid for Jazz-Damaged Instrumentalists".

add 8) All of the events listed will actually take place. However, as always, due to unforeseen circumstances, the program is subject to change.

We wish you all a very pleasant Fasching. Your RD, CH, mr
