21:00 Jon Hendricks & Company USA
Isn't he the one who sings that incredibly fast Parker fill with text on the Manhattan Transfer recording A Night In Tunisia? ("It's the most difficult I ever did", Hendricks told me during a phone call.) And didn't the same Hendricks create a vocal trio in 1958 with Dave Lambert and Annie Ross and put texts to numerous jazz solos, which he then sang masterfully? And wasn't Bobby McFerrin talking about this same musician in 1980 when he said it would take him years to put to use everything Hendricks had shown him? And isn't this one evening you should make a reservation for well in advance? The answer to all four questions: YES. MR
24:00 PianoNightLine Robert Schönherr Trio
You know it's midnight when the crowd at Porgy slowly begins to disperse, when the overhead lights dim and the stage takes on a bluish glow. This is the hour of the lonely wolf, when the remaining handful of special listeners sink into their chairs, shoving aside thoughts about tomorrow while at the same time wondering how it is that yet another good pianist is onstage again. Robert Schönherr, a prominent figure in the apparently never-ending stream of excellent pianists, will perhaps be the only one thinking about tomorrow. He's a medical doctor and will have to show up on time to receive his patients. MR
