21:00 Charles Gayle & William Parker & Rashied Ali USA
"Saxophonist Charles Gayle's music starts at the farthest edge of John Coltrane and Albert Ayler's explorations and goes out from there." (Jerome Wilson, Option)
Charles Gayle is a top notch Free Jazzer who has been playing the sax since the 50s without ever really linking up with any one scene. As a result of the constant put downs he received at the hands of the music business (which was still mainly controlled by whites), Gayle initially played and lived on the streets, until he was discovered by the Knitting Factory. Since then he has worked with the likes of Cecil Taylor, Reggie Workman, Sunny Murray, Andrew Cyrille and Frank Foster. He also goes on European tours with his trio. This time he's playing with Rashied Ali, the featured drummer on some of John Coltrane's later recordings (i.e. Interstellar Space and the recently-released Stellar Regions).
At any rate, tonight there will be no shortage of expressivity and energy. CH
24:00 PianoNightLine Robert Schönherr Trio
You know it's midnight when the crowd at Porgy slowly begins to disperse, when the overhead lights dim and the stage takes on a bluish glow. This is the hour of the lonely wolf, when the remaining handful of special listeners sink into their chairs, shoving aside thoughts about tomorrow while at the same time wondering how it is that yet another good pianist is onstage again. Robert Schönherr, a prominent figure in the apparently never-ending stream of excellent pianists, will perhaps be the only one thinking about tomorrow. He's a medical doctor and will have to show up on time to receive his patients. MR
