21:00 Heat Wave A Tribute to Carmen McRae

In the present album Heat Wave, vibraphonist Cal Tjader and the great singer Carmen McRae - who died last November - succeeded in creating an ingenuous synthesis of jazz and Latin music, whereby the unusual backup by two trombones (no trumpets or saxophone!) catches the ear/eye. McRae's voice outshines all others and, with her remarkable feel for phrasing, she is able to handle tunes from such contrasting composers as Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington and Stevie Wonder. Happily, almost every female jazz singer with a name and voice from around these parts will be participating in this tribute. Which doesn't mean that there aren't other vocal talents in the local scene waiting to be discovered... MR
