21:00 Marc Ribot Solo USA

"In session, I have sometimes noted horrified looks when starting to play. However, my attitude has been that the worst that can happen is that I get kicked out of the job I am doing. And if someone has engaged me without knowing what I do, then perhaps it's better". (Marc Ribot)

These jobs, which Ribot mentions here in passing, were with musicians such as Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, John Zorn, Hal Willner and John Lurie. After being named "Guitarist of the Year" in 1990 by Rolling Stone, Ribot created his own group, Rootless Cosmopolitans, which changed shape slightly when Shrek came on board to replace Anthony Coleman. Recently he has made solo recordings - on acoustic guitar, for once - of pieces by Frantz Casseus, his guitar teacher. Tonight, Marc Ribot will stand out again as one of the most consistent, humorous and refined deconstructivists in the field of improvised music. CH
