Ernst W., in his main capacity as solo bassist with the Vienna Symphonic, is often confronted with the "need to rule" of any number of star conductors. "Thank God - and Egon - that these podium-maniacs are focusing on music direction and keeping their ambitious hands away from politics, medicine and the controls of locomotives," Ernst W has said. Yet even Ernst W. wants to rule. As both compensation and consolation, he takes his symphony colleagues on frequent musical excursions to Porgy & Bess, where they are winning more and more friends. After all, not everyone can rule at the same time and anyway, Ernst W.'s prime interest is in dominating his instrument.
