Jack Walrath, a trumpeter who played in Mingus bands from 1974 until C.M.'s death, is joining the new line-up of Masters of Suspens for a return visit to P&B, to uphold the motto of his latest recording by sending his public into HipGnosis. Portrait Fritz Pauer
The last planned Portrait in this series is being dedicated to Fritz Pauer, who already at age 17 took inspiration from the unusual music of Hans Koller. In the '60s, Fritz emigrated to Berlin where he accompanied various renowned American jazz soloists and cut several remarkable records. After taking a series of metaphysical wrong turns and detours and engaging in the widest imaginable assortment of musical experiments - in the course of which, as an excellent teacher, he left indelible prints on his pianist descendants - Fritz jumped decisively back into Mainstream, to which he is closest, emotionally. For years he worked consistently with his trio, in which his input as accompanist was particularly appreciated. See (hear) for yourself by checking out how he accompanied Till Brönner, the German talent, or the Swiss musician's musician Andy Scherrer. And if this is not enough, why not go indulge in Pauer's compositorial delicacies? MR
