21:00 Joachim Kühn Solo
"When talking about any thinker, you shouldn't ask, 'What is his point of view?' but rather ' How many viewpoints is he willing to entertain?'. In other words, does he have an ample thought apparatus or does he suffer from a shortage of space - meaning, is he tied to a 'system'?" (Egon Fridell)
For any solo event, you shouldn't ask yourself "What is the musician's point of view?", but rather "How many viewpoints contribute to the musical material?" Born in 1944 in Leipzig, pianist Joachim Kühn is "Europe's most interesting traveler in the border zone between jazz and rock." (Le Monde). Backed by intensive free jazz experience, he has made music with such renowned jazzcats as Gato Barbieri, Aldo Romano, Philly Joe Jones, Don Cherry, Karl Berger, Phil Woods, Eje Thelin, Billy Cobham, Michel Portal, Daniel Humair, J.F.Jenny-Clarke, George Lewis, Rolf Kühn, Jean Luc Ponty, Alphonse Mouzon, Jan Akkerman and Berlin Philharmonic's Ottomar Borwitzky(!). In other words, whoever manages to work intensively and successfully with such a wide range of musical partners must indeed be equipped with a spacious and flexible hearing/thinking apparatus and certainly does not suffer from a lack of stylistic space. Would this also mean he rejects all systems? Kühn currently lives in Paris. His solo artistry is on display tonight in the rue du mirroir numero deux (2 Mirror Street or Spiegelgasse 2). Venez vite! 23.00 Rudy Linka Trio
Rudy Linka, a guitarist with a Czech birth certificate and NY address, is the hope of all fans of the guitar-playing tradition forged by Jim Hall, Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel. Often ignored is the fact that John Abercrombie's former student has long since found his own voice and that this distinctive voice has already been documented in a variety of convincing recordings. Also deserving special mention is Michael Formanek, who appeared at Porgy not long ago alongside Tim Berne and who has recently padded his reputation as a fine and adaptable accompanist with exceptional accomplishments as a bandleader and composer. Czech it out! CH
