21:00 Joey Baron's Baron Down (USA)

Drummer Joey Baron emerged from the downtown NY Avantgarde Scene dominated by John Zorn, Tim Berne and Wayne Horvitz, yet still managed to go on to play with Dizzy Gillespie, Jim Hall and the like. Aside from his role as co-leader of the band Miniature (with Berne and Hank Roberts), Baron has been concentrating on his ensemble Baron Down, which has a rather unusual line-up -- perhaps due to the tendency of the bassist and pianist to show up late. The music produced by this ensemble is as unusual as its configuration, encompassing both improvisation and composition, whereby the tunes are initially reduced to (what is judged to be) their bare essentials. Accordingly, none of the pieces, in their first Tongue-in-Groove renditions, lasts longer than six minutes. As Joey Baron put it: "Keeping things short really sharpens not only the musicians' focus, but the audience's focus. Twenty-minute solos can be amazing displays, but they don't usually interpret or enhance the composition. Keeping it short keeps the tight relationship between improvisation and composition intact".
