Gerhard Hermann can certainly be ranked among the senior servicemen of modern jazz. Yet, in contrast to many of his peers, he has not become embittered by his long stewardship and has managed to get himself back on course after a period of excess, resisting the forces which could easily push you under. Hermann has a long music apprenticeship to look back upon and knows most of its shadow sides, having also had ample exposure to the light. Stylistically, his playing lies somewhere between Daniel Humair and Paul Motian -- free across the whole width of the spectrum but still respectful of the system of jazz labyrinth coordinates.
