21:00 Marilyn Crispell Solo USA
"Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano. She is one of a very
few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz." The New York Times
Marilyn Crispell's interest in jazz was lit primarily by the music of John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor
but the strongest influence on her development came from Anthony Braxton, with whom she worked in a
duo (as of 1978), in his quartet and in the Creative Music Orchestra. Furthermore, Crispell is a staple
member of the Reggie Workman Ensemble and puts in occasional solo performances with Barry Guy's London
Jazz Composers Orchestra. In recent times, she has been enriching her solo numbers which now, due to their
intensity and virtuosity, are certain to make themselves felt by every one of her listeners! CH

Harald Friedl: vocals
Herbert Berger: saxophone
Heli Punzenberger: guitar
Josef Novotny: keyboards
Karl Sayer: bass
Robert Kainar: drums, percussion
The young saxophonist deserts from the military band. The bassist defies the vicious circle of beer
haze and bar music. The drummer is sloshed out of the gourmet restaurant of a ghost ship and down
onto hard pavement. The '68 generation desperado falls for a sunflower smile. The singer kneads the
fog, forms it into blue-red faces and paints texts on the walls of his cave. Searching for the right
keyboard man, they stumble across a CD by the avant-garde "Novo" and realize they have found their man.
They drive into the capital and shoot at the piano player; they abduct him and take him to a farm in an
excellent wine-growing area for rehearsals. They choose the American bluesman Tom Waits to act as
godfather and with him bring in the whole rhythmic cosmos of the Mississippi Delta. Then they work
and rework the music until it molds around Friedl's peculiar, poetic texts like a custom-made glove.
