21:00 Session by Oliver Kent The McCoy Tyner Songbook
This session will focus on the works of pianist McCoy Tyner. Tyner, a trail blazer for modal playing,
underwent an enormous stylistic transformation, beginning with his work with the early Coltrane quartet
and continuing on through his collaboration with Michael Brecker. As composer and style-setter, he has
had an influence on every modern pianist and his charts definitely should be included in the Porgy & Bess
Realbook, especially since Oliver Kent is reputed to have particularly discriminating ears. The charts will
be on hand in P&B two weeks before this session. MR
