Portrait Wolfgang Muthspiel
Wolfgang Muthspiel has pulled off what many others can only dream of: to head off from Vienna to America
as an undiscovered talent and to return as a Star. Yet, whereas in previous years Muthspiel cultivated
connections with older and well-established jazzmen such as Paul Motian and Tom Harrell, now he's sharing
the high point of his creativity with others of his own age and interest group (Scher, Wollesen) to write
yet another chapter in Austro-American jazz history. Of particular interest will be the encounter between
Muthspiel and Louis Sclavis, the mentor of the younger French jazz scene, who dazzled his Porgy audience
during the Paris Meets Vienna series already last year. MR
