21:00 Mike Westbrook Band: Off Abbey Road (GB)

Posthumous plunderings -- even by Beatle survivors -- of Lennon archives are rampant these days and even rejected takes are often brought in for technical reprocessing at the music recycling centers if traces of Lennon genius have been detected in them. Often, as these attempts are largely inspired by sensation-seeking or profit motives, they should be viewed with a degree of skepticism. This caution, however, is unnecessary in the case of the British nonconformist Mike Westbrook, who refuses to subject his listeners to lukewarm plagiarism or trite, warmed-over clichés, even though this non-exploitative approach might have a negative impact on his wallet. Westbrook's forté, rather, is the creation of fresh and original interpretations of the latest cuts by the fantastic foursome (The published version of "Let It Be" was preceded by an earlier unreleased recording!), and this is certain to appeal to the minds and hearts of the guests at P&B. According to the latest information, Mr. Jackson has not yet acquired the rights for Abbey Road and so AKM is in a position to add the royalties from this production to the fund for needy ex-Beatles. And as a result, next Christmas we may be spared yet another remake! Come Together! CH
