If the tuba were always thrust on the fattest member/s of the band, then this formation would have shaped up into one of the major heavyweights of the music cosmos. The size of the paunch, however, ceased to be a (distressing) tubist-criteria as - with the arrival of Don Butterfield, Ray Draper and Howard Johnson - the tuba cast off its 'oompah' existence and elevated itself from its lonely stature as master of the bass line to join the class of solo and melodic instruments. Here, tubas, trombones and horns - combined with singers and a rhythm group, plus compositions by Blood Sweat & Tears, Jimi Hendrix, Jaco Pastorius, Lennon/McCartney and Jon Sass, and arrangements by Heimo Schmid and Helmar Hill - will provide a loaded table for lovers of oppulent fare. Now the question is: Will our stage boards hold up under all this brass? CH
