Thu. 7. Mar.
21:00 Tim Berne & Bloodcount USA
Tim Berne: saxophone
Chris Speed: saxophone, clarinet
Michael Formanek: bass
Jim Black: drums
As far as I'm concerned, Tim Berne has counted - for years already -
among the creative powers-that-be of the Lower East Side scene, which
gained fairly wide recognition through the activities of the Knitting
Factory. In recent times this club has attracted more attention due to
slick image-marketing than by the innovative quality of its musical
productions; nevertheless some representatives of this scene have
retained their allegiance to the Avant-Garde (whatever that might mean)
and have quietly & consistently continued to develop their own musical
concepts, resisting temptations to sacrifice them in favor of
short-term, get-rich-quick schemes. Tim Berne is a "bright" composer,
who has known how to build on the ideas of his teacher/mentor Julius
Hemphill and, with his own band Bloodcount, to blend four individualists
into a homogeneous quartet. CH
