21:00 Heavy Weather A Tribute to Joe Zawinul

To be able to write music like this, you have to be free inside. you have to be Josef Zawinul with two brown children, a black woman, two pianos: you have to come from Vienna, be a Cancer and free of clich‚s. Miles Davis, 1971.

Miles is the father and we're his sons. But the son, when he sits on his father's shoulders, can always see farther. Joe Zawinul.

After having joined in the making of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Zawinul and Shorter decided to form a band based on the concept of collective improvisation, in which each musician is given the chance to participate in the commentary without over-taxing the conventional melody - soli - melody form. The resulting group,Weather Report, soon became entrenched as the top fusion group and Zawinul went on to become one of the main European musicians to make a lasting impact on the development of jazz (if not actually the most influential European jazzer). Over 400,000 copies of Heavy Weather were sold alone - a quantity seldom reached in the jazz market. One reason for this must have been Zawinul's composition Birdland , a hat-tip to the legendary NY jazz club which even made it into the commercial hit parade! A Tribute to a genuine world master!!
