Liebman, who began as a tenorist, was convinced by Coltrane that he should become a jazz musician. From 1966-68, he played with Charles Lloyd and also with Lennie Tristano. Later he teamed up with Elvin Jones and, in 73-74, with Miles Davis. He earned a name for himself in his band Lookout Farm with his alter ego Richie Beirach and also in the wonderful ensemble Quest, which included Billy Hart, Cecil McBee as well as Beirach. In the 80s, he devoted himself nearly exclusively to mastering the soprano sax, becoming one of the great stylists on the instrument alongside Steve Lacy and Wayner Shorter. At times, on the soprano, I certainly absorbed a wide variety of influences, Liebman once explained, but they blended so much when they came out of me that I wasn't aware of them anymore
And now for a few figures: Liebman released around 75 records under his own name, another 100 as sideman and he penned nearly 200 compositions. His artistic output ranged from "Straight Ahead" to chamber music, from fusion to the avantgarde. He was also active as an author and teacher.
Liebman has worked with Andy Manndorff, Wolfgang Reisinger and Heinrich von Kalnein, as well as with Wolfgang Muthspiel. In any case, we're pleased at the prospect of another annual Liebman Gig!! CH
