21:00 Steve Coleman & the Five Elements

Following his recent Tribute, Steve Coleman's returning at the head of the ensemble which helped him the most to make a lasting impact on the jazz scene. On this, Coleman once said: In the end, what people see and hear is the music. But music really comes from whatever stands behind it. Actually, all my groups start with a philosophy. The way you think about life, the world, creativity and all those things. When you let yourself be taken in by the music you can get at the ideas from which it comes. These ideas are expressed through the sound. Music is only the medium. As soon as people immerse themselves in our music, everything imaginable starts to happen. (Steve Coleman)

Five Elements grew out of the so-called M-Base Collective; a collection of like-minded-- musically and politically-oriented -- musicians. This is the background from which Cassandra Wilson, Geri Allen, Craig Osby & Graham Haynes come. Each one of this group has since set out as a soloist, with relative success.

M-Base only serves to make things more clear, Coleman explained. That's why M-Base is a good name:.because it didn't mean anything before we adopted it. It's not enough for people if I just say: The "Five Elements" make creative dance music. They'll think we belong to the jazz-rap movement. But Monk and Ellington didn't call their music jazz either. (Steve Coleman)

In any case, the name "Five Elements" will suffice to bring listeners into the Club in droves. Which means, hurry up and order your tickets now so you too can immerse yourself in their music. Who knows what may happen then... CH
