21:00 PolyGram Night Yosuke Yamashita New York Trio

Fritz Pauer's verdict when he heard the LP "Chiasma" in a blindfold test went: In any case, we've got a gigantic musician here. Not only is he comfortable with all the jazz styles; he also must know classical music... The theme, which is very avantgarde and abstract -- that is to say, without a sustained rhythm -- is continued very consistently throughout the improvisation.

He is far more than a truly exceptional technician. He has the same power of self-expression that we heard with Charlie Parker. Naturally there will be people who will refer to this music only as some kind of noise but they're totally wrong. Yamashita reflects the present in his music. (Walter Norris)

Much praise for the Japanese pianist who became, under the striking influence of Cecil Taylor (i.e. in puncto energy), the most independent representative of Japanese free jazz. Of course, he no longer enjoys the reputation of "Kamikaze Jazzer", which he earned through his ecstatic playing style. For some time now, he has ceased to oncentrate totally on energy and has increasingly shifted his focus onto ever-more subtle differentiation. In any case, his New York Trio -- with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Pheeroan AkLaff -- is an excellent example of musical prowess in the highly-charged composition/improvisation field.
