21:00 Andy Laster's Hydra

Hydra is a formation which ranks as an established band rather than as a fleeting project. Having this status makes it hard to line up gigs, because many concert organizers treat formally established groups as static entities. As a result, most bands are only hired to perform once. Though this is an absurd phenomenon, it is evidently in line with the spirit of the times. For musical development to occur, continuous work is required. Andy Laster (much like Eskelin) represents the generation of jazz musicians that is following in the footsteps of forerunners such as John Zorn or Bill Frisell, without continually remaining in their shadows. With his quartet Hydra, Laster has created a forum for a cluster of talents: Among them Tom Rainey, who has concertized with Christian Muthspiel, in addition to Fred Hersch, Lovano and Abercrombie; Scott Colley, who has ties with Art Farmer in Vienna; and Herb Robertson, the congenial partner of Tim Berne and one of our most underrated trumpeters.
