21:00 Mark Dresser Trio Movie Show
Mark Dresser: bass
Anthony Coleman: piano, keyboards
Chris Speed: saxophone
Silent films: Un Chien Andalou (Louis Buñuel), A Propos de Nice (Jean
Vigo)
Mark Dresser has been attempting for some time now to breath fresh life
into the times when musicians actually played from a pit in front of the
screen at showings of silent movies. In addition, the bassist and his colleagues
have been drawing on the films themselves as sources of inspiration for
collective improvisation. Having already subjected "The Cabinet of
Dr. Caligari" to this treatment, now he has taken up "Un Chien
Andalou", made by Buñuel with the powerful support of Salvadore
Dali. "Chien Andalou" is a film best remembered by many for the
scene in which a woman's eye is cut in half by a scalpel... outrageous for
a film made in the early 20s! The second film which Dresser, Coleman and
Speed handle on the program is Jean Vigo's "A Propos de Nice",
a social criticism, in which the tourist façade of Nice is contrasted
with the city's poverty. CH
