The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia.
Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. Featuring lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, the eighteen albums by The Necks stand up to re-listening time and time again. The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today.
Piotr Kurek
Warsaw-based producer, musician, and theater and film composer Piotr Kurek presents “Smartwoods,” an ensemble piece as delicate and enchanting as a pastel-colored Midsummer Night’s Dream. Inspired by Baroque music and ethereal jazz, “Smartwoods” is a surreal pastoral with a new twist, a lively yet delicate chamber music piece, and a work of wondrous, magical animism. Here, sounds give rise to a bucolic scene. Kurek paints a tableau of a landscape teeming with living beings that communicate with one another.
Isabella Forciniti
Isabella Forciniti’s performances on the modular synthesizer resemble an animistic séance. The composer and musician, who was born in Italy and lives in Vienna, holds a degree in communication studies. Forciniti breathes life into the instrument with incredible dexterity and sensitivity: it begins to speak, to communicate with her. Witnessing this interaction between musician and machine is a truly magical experience.
