Sustainable thinking and action concerns us all
This is the only way we can contribute to the long-term preservation of our planet and make our coexistence more accessible and socially just. As art, cultural and scientific institutions, we in particular create social awareness with our sophisticated content and its high-quality presentation and communication.
We see it as an important task to make a relevant contribution to sustainable action, environmental protection and respectful coexistence without exclusion and discrimination. On the one hand, we want to achieve this through concrete measures in the organization and implementation of our events. On the other hand, we want to actively address sustainability in our communication with our audience.
Finally, we also want to encourage the arts and sciences to engage with sustainability issues. To this end, we have created a guideline for all our employees for the implementation of events and exhibitions, which is being implemented gradually and consistently. This involves a holistic view and evaluation of all key areas of activity in the planning and implementation of events and exhibitions: Event or exhibition venue, event or exhibition technology, general procurement processes and waste management, social aspects (such as accessibility), mobility/transport, catering/gastronomy, communication, accommodation.
Through its sustainability strategy, the P&B contributes to the implementation of the United Nations' Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Art, culture and science as well as the promotion of creativity contribute equally to the economic, social and
ecological dimensions of Agenda 2030.
The P&B has set itself the goal of organizing events and exhibitions that are as sustainable as possible and has taken the following initial steps: Mandatory criteria are set in relation to the following areas of activity: Management and communication; Buildings, equipment; Mobility and climate protection; Procurement, materials and waste management; Energy & water.
The following measures were implemented:
- Acquisition of waste separation systems
- Gradual conversion of lighting to LED
- Switch from disposable to reusable bottles
- Conversion to more environmentally friendly cleaning agents
The following key aspects, among others, are taken into account when organizing sustainable events:
- Promotion of climate-friendly travel (e.g. recommendation for our audience to travel by public transport. Cooperation with the European Jazznetwork (EJN) in connection with "Green Pilot Tours" (https://www.europejazz.net/activity/greenpilot-tours) for musicians and bands.
- The renunciation of disposable beverage containers
- Measures in relation to accessibility
- the exclusive use of paper with eco-labels or 100% recycled paper recycled paper on both internal and external printed materials
- the renunciation or reuse of decorations and floral arrangements
- Mindfulness in language with regard to gender-equitable formulations and inclusion of minorities
- communicating the measures taken to raise awareness among our visitors and artists on our websites and in printed materials
Through sustainable catering at our events, we ensure, among other things, that
- only reusable tableware is used
- food and catering waste is disposed of properly and in an environmentally friendly manner
- free tap water is available
- at least one vegetarian or vegan dish is offered
- seasonal and regional agricultural products are offered
Our commitment to sustainability is to be understood as a process. All employees are therefore committed to the consistent implementation and continuous development of the sustainability mission statement.
