Playing with other musicians is like meeting and conversing with other people. Some folks just like to hear themselves talk. They prefer to dominate the conversation, barely letting you get a word in. Others might allow you some room to speak, but will try and compete with you, to show off what they know, or to embarass you. Thankfully, there's always a few others who want to listen as well as speak, who really are interested in communicating and exchanging ideas. These people are secure enough in their own identity to not try and impress the other... Rather than pretending that they know everything, they are open to different ideas, and delighted to learn something new.

For many years, my experience of playing with Peter has been one of conversing with an open, sharing, caring musician, a great listener on and off the stage, working to make music that evolves and grows into something beautiful. Can’t really pin down the exact date, when I met Marc for the first time in the late 80’ies for a duo-session at his house north of Manhattan, but I remember clearly how excited and nervous I was. Marc was polite and friendly, we pulled out a couple of originals, as it is custom at NY private sessions, I brought one called Kassa blanca, which means constantly broke (blank wallet), a permanent state of living for me in those days. More than four deacades and many concerts later with various bands (i.e. Marc Copland Trio with Bill Stewart at Cleopatra’s Needle in NY, or several tours with his trio in Europe with Jochen Rückert, or the quartet with John Abercrombie and Billy Heart) I am blessed to still being good friends with Marc, and being over sixty now I feel to have come a bit closer to being able to play and record ‘standards’ with this giant of this art form in the most intimate setting as a duo. Marc Copland, 1948 in Philadelphia geboren, machte sicher Mitte der 1970er Jahre zuerst am Altsaxofon einen Namen. Doch irgendwann spürte er, dass etwas falsch lief: »Die Musik, die ich spielte, war nicht die Musik, die mir im Kopf herumging.« Von einem Tag auf den anderen legte er das Saxofon zur Seite, zog sich völlig aus der Szene zurück und begann, Klavier zu spielen. Zehn Jahre übte er verbissen und studierte andere Pianisten. 1985 fühlte er sich endlich bereit für den Start in die zweite Karriere.
Jede seiner Aufnahmen zeigt unentdeckte Facetten des freundlichen Chamäleons, sei es Another Place (2008), die wunderbar hymnische Zusammenarbeit mit dem alten Gefährten John Abercrombie, die mystischen Entdeckungsreisen mit dem Trompeter Tim Hagans (Beautiful Lily, 2005, und Alone Together, 2008), die innigen Diskurse im Quartett mit Jason Seizer (Fair Way, Serendipity und Time Being) (…) sowie die gefeierten New York Trio Recordings (mit Adlaten wie Paul Motian oder Gary Peacock, die selbst schon Legendenstatus besitzen. Der seit 2003 in Paris und Wien (zuvor 14 Jahre in New York) lebende Vorarlberger Kontrabassist/Komponist Peter Herbert hat mit ca. 100 Konzerten und 100.000 Meilen Flug/wegstrecke pro Jahr ein sehr ‚bewegtes‘ künstlerisches Leben. Der Hans Koller-Preisträger 2001 (‚Musiker des Jahres‘) spielt als Interpret nicht nur Solokonzerte (CD: ‚Naked Bass‘ ), sondern bevorzugt in Duo’s wie mit David Tronzo (CD: Segmente, AZM 1001), Carol Robinson (bass-clarinette/electronics) oder seinem mit Jean-Charles Richard (sax) und Christophe Marguet (dr). In Wien ist das Trio mit Karl Ratzer und Howard Curtis diezentrale künstlerische Betätigung. Als gefragter ’sideman‘ spielte er in diversen Jazzformationen, wie dem Marc Copland/John Abercrombie Quartett, Bobby Previte’s „The Horse“, John Clarke Octet, Robin Eubanks ‚Mental Images‘. Mit mehr als 170 CD-Aufnahmen ist seine Arbeit auf diesem Gebiet auch bestens dokumentiert.
Peter Herbert ist auch als vielseitiger Komponist tätig mit Arbeiten für verschiedene Orchester und Kammermusikensembles (Cascabel/NYC, Absolute Ensemble NYC, Janus ensemble/Wien, Vorarlberger Symphonieorchester, ensemble plus/Bregenz, etc.), aber auch Film- und Theatermusik (Aktionstheater ensemble/Wien,K.L.A.S. Kärnten, La Voz Festival of the Americas/Santa Fe/New Mexico u.a.).1999 etablierte er sein eigenes Internet Plattenlabel „Aziza Music“(www.azizamusic.com). Seit 2007 unterrichtet Peter Herbert am JIM der Anton Bruckner Privatuni in Linz eine kleine Kontrabassklasse. (Pressetext)
