Georg Philipp Telemann – Marian Friedl
 'The Telemannia'

Marta Kratochvílová: baroque traverso, piccolo flute
Štěpán Flagar: soprano sax
ophone
Marian Friedl: bass

The cycle of 12 Fantasias per flauto traverso solo is a set of virtuoso compositions for unaccompanied baroque flute. In our version, Marian Friedl added a new part to Telemann's original from the perspective of a jazz player and invited prominent traverso and saxophone players to collaborate. A brilliant musical fusion of old and new is born!

Marian Friedl about his new version:
I approached this by analyzing Telemann's techniques across the entire expanse of the 12 Fantasias suite as well as in each measure, and then tried to use the widest possible range of techniques in a similar vein in my own line. I did not create just a "bass part" and certainly not a "bass part in the baroque spirit". On the contrary, I wanted to communicate with Telemann, so I used my line to force the performer into a different concept of phrases, dynamics, time, I worked with shifting the harmony and metro-rhythmic line.
