Okazaki wuchs in Port Townsend im Nordwesten der USA auf. Ab 1997 lebte er in New York City, wo er an der Harvard University, der Manhattan School of Music und der Juilliard School unter anderem bei Rodney Jones, Kenny Barron, Manny Albam und Anthony Davis studierte. Seitdem arbeitet er in der dortigen Jazzszene u. a. mit Stanley Turrentine, Lenny Pickett, Kenny Barron, Steve Coleman, Jonathan Finlayson, Ohad Talmor und Jane Monheit (Taking a Chance on Love, 2004). Bei der Thelonious Monk Guitar Competition war er 2005 Finalist. Ab Anfang der 2000er-Jahre betätigte er sich auch als Komponist für kleinere Ensembles. 2007 nahm er sein Debütalbum Mirror auf (u. a. mit Christof Knoche; in erweiterter Besetzung u. a. mit David Binney und der Vokalistin Jen Shyu entstand 2008 Generations). Bei seiner Produktion Figurations (Sunnyside, 2012) spielte er mit Miguel Zenón, Thomas Morgan und Dan Weiss. 2017 legte er das Album Trickster vor. Er lebt in Brooklyn. (Pressetext)

Mit »The Sky Below« knüpft der Gitarrist Miles Okazaki direkt an sein u. a. von DownBeat und JazzTimes hochgelobtes Album »Trickster« von 2017 an. Okazaki nahm sich die Stücke von »Trickster« noch einmal vor, extrahierte deren Grundkomponenten und komponierte aus diesem genetischen Material die Stücke des neuen Albums. Die Triobesetzung mit Anthony Tidd am elektrischen Bass und Sean Rickman am Schlagzeug wurde für »The Sky Below« um den Pianisten Matt Mitchell erweitert. Thematisch begibt sich das Quartett auf eine Hochseereise, überquert Grenzen, besucht zauberhafte Inseln, gerät in einen Sturm und erreicht doch glücklich wieder den Heimathafen. (Pressetext)

The trickster figure is an ancient archetype in human folklore. Tricksters are creative in nature, using mischief and magic to disrupt the state of things, breaking taboos and conventions, opening doorways. They exist outside of the mainstream, working from the margins, creating movement across the borders. They cause damage and they heal. They are storytellers and improvisers. Because these ideas resonate with my approach to music-making, it occurred to me that the trickster could be a fertile theme for a new book of compositions. As I began my research, I looked for themes that seemed musical in nature, translating them into compositions for quartet. My main concern was that the musicians focus on testing the limits of each composition through improvisation, with the sensibility of storytelling in mind. The listener can get a sense of the trickster narratives by following the rhythms, which have many twists and turns and are not always what they seem to be. (Pressetext)
