Though Vienna Teng’s forthcoming album „Dreaming Through The Noise“, marks her debut for Zoe/Rounder Records, she comes to the label with the CV of a seasoned veteran. Teng has performed on the Late Show with David Letterman, appeared on several NPR programs, and earned rhapsodic reviews from scores of publications nationwide. Set for July 25 release, „Dreaming Through The Noise“ marks a major creative flowering for the singer/songwriter/pianist.
Teng’s hometown paper, the San Francisco Chronicle, once noted, „Her songs are like dreams: images are only partly articulated, but the emotions they recall are fully realized.” This has never been more true than on „Dreaming Through The Noise“. The album opens with „Blue Caravan“, a haunting, close-miked, piano-and-strings meditation that immediately announces Teng’s artistic and sonic ambitions. Recalling the spectral beauty of late-period Talk Talk, the song finds Teng at her moody best. From there she counters with a gorgeous cascading piano hook that introduces „Whatever You Want“, the album’s catchiest song. Elsewhere, songs like „City Hall“ and „One Bedroom, One Bath“ reveal Teng’s gift for storytelling, and unique arrangement, while „Transcontinental, 1:30am“, introduces a bossa nova groove, muted trumpet solo, and Teng’s sultriest vocal performance. The album concludes with „Pontchartrain“ a six-minute dirge that recalls the swelling, silencing waters that spilled into New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and „Recessional“, a skeletal ballad with a lyric that inspired the album’s title. „Dreaming“ was produced by Larry Klein, noted for his past work with Joni Mitchell and Madeleine Peyroux. Teng also enlisted a group of top shelf backing musicians for the „Dreaming’“ sessions, including string arranger Mark Orton (Bill Frisell, Tin Hat Trio), violinist Carla Kihlstedt (Tom Waits, Tin Hat Trio), and percussionist Jay Bellerose (Paula Cole, Duncan Sheik, Guster).
