“Best of 2016” und “Best Jazz of 2016” urteilen die Los Angeles Times wie auch PopMatters über das Debutalbum des aktuellen two-horn, bass and drums-Quartetts Rhombal, ein Projekt des Grammy-nominierten Bassisten Stephan Crump. Seit 1994 ist Brooklyn seine Homebase, mit Musikern wie Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey und Mary Halvorson verbindet ihn eine langjährige Zusammenarbeit, Singer-Songwriter wie Jen Chaplin oder die Filmszene schätzen ihn am akustischen wie elektrischen Bass und als Komponisten, ... und nicht zuletzt ist sein Name untrennbar mit dem Rosetta Trio verbunden. Für Rhombal bringt Crump nunmehr mit Tenorsaxophonisten Ellery Eskelin einen der langgedienten Aushängeschilder der kreativen Jazzszene mit dem brillanten jungen Trompeter Adam O´Farrill zusammen, am Schlagzeug findet sich kein geringerer als Kassa Overall, der sich in Formationen mit Musikern von Christian McBride, Vijay Iyer, Wallace Roney, Ravi Coltrane, Geri Allen bis Peter Evans wie auch in verschiedenen Hip-Hop- und Independent Rock-Projekten und als Rapper und Produzent einen Namen erspielt hat.
Die ersten Kompositionen für das Projekt entstanden in den letzten Lebensmonaten von Crumps Bruder, aber „Rhombal is not about sadness. Much more, it’s a commemoration of a death well-confronted, of a spiritual evolution I witnessed.“ Und so werden der Musik auch “solemn, spiritual, and, ultimately, celebratory” (Bandcamp) Aspekte und „a resolute emotional core” (Point of Departure) attestiert. Oder in den Worten von Anthony Dean-Harris (Nextbop): „Rhombal is a shifting, beautiful quartet that is yet another group that bassist Stephan Crump can be proud to have assembled playing music he should be proud for having written so beautifully. As a composer, the Memphis native is top notch, possibly one of the best in jazz today for his consistent brilliance. As a bandleader, he's clearly done it again, with hope that Rhombal can grow as prominent as the Rosetta Trio. As a bassist, he will always sound like he's having a ball, even in compositions where sadness is the root. As an album, this is an hour that's tight and so replayable that one could almost say it felt too short if it were so economically well made.
