Breinschmid is a vibraphonist, drummer and percussionist with an international reputation. Born 1970 in Vienna, 1988: Graduated summa cum laude at the Vienna University for Music. As an all-rounder he is not only one of the best Austrian vibe players but also an excellent drummer and a fully-fledged symphonic percussionist.
As a freelance vibist and drummer he has worked with Buddy De Franco, Terry Gibbs, Ken Peplovsky, Jake Hanna, Bucky Pizzarrelli, Peanuts Hucko, Bob Haggard, Bob Wilber, Scott Hamilton, Bill Berry, Jim Galloway, Randy Sandke, George Masso, Antti Sarpila, Byron Stripling, Joel Helleni, Joe Ascione, Lee Harper, Bob Barnard, Oscar Klein, Bill Ramsey, Hans Alan Vachè, Dan Barrett, Tommy Vig, Howard Alden, Pete York, Rossano Sportiello, Frank Roberscheuten, Engelbert Wrobel, Nicki Parrott, Butch Miles.
Since 1988, he has been a member of the Orchestra of United Stages in Vienna, participating in shows like Cats, Phantom of the Opera, 42nd Street, Les Miserables, Freudiana, Rocky Horror Show, Grease, Elisabeth, Beauty and the Beast, Anatevka, Mozart, Tanz der Vampire, Jekyll & Hyde. Wake up, Rebecca. Jesus Christ Superstar, The Producers, Legally Blond, Love Never Dies.
As symphonic timpanist he has worked under – to name but a few – Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, Nikolaus Hanoncourt, Franz Welser-Moest, Roger Norrington.
He has played with Hanoncourts Concentus Musicus, Camerata Salzburg, Ensemble Kontrapunkte, Ensemble “die reihe”, Pro Brass, Wiener Kammerphilharmonie, Wiener Kammeroper, René Clemencic Consort, Concilium Musicum, Wiener Johann Strauß Orchester, Wiener Mozart Orchester, the Israel Philharmonic, L. A. Philharmonic.
He played marimbaphone with the Dave Brubeck Quartet at several performances of Fiesta de la Posada in Vienna.
1999: percussion soloist at the Tokushima Festival, Japan.
2001: former US President Bill Clinton joined Martin’s band, the Radio Kings, at a concert in Schönbrunn Castle, Vienna.
2002: performance of the Bartok Sonata for Percussion and 2 Pianos in the Cairo Opera House.
2004: percussionist for Joe Zawinul’s Danube Symphony.
2008: Tribute to Lionel Hampton - a series of 30 concerts, some with his own band, The Radio Kings, some with the Vienna based Broadway Bigband, dedicated to the memory of the legendary Lionel Hampton. Release of CD “Salute to Lionel Hampton”.
2008: Concert - tour through Europe with the Frank Roberscheuten Trio ( Dutch saxophone player Frank Roberscheuten, pianist Rossano Sportiello from Italy and Martin Breinschmid on drums). Release of CD “Three Wise Men”.
2010 - 2014: Annual european tour of the "Three Wise Men": Rossano Sportiello, Frank Roberscheuten, Martin Breinschmid. In the course of the past three years this ensemble has established itself as one of the leading bands of traditional jazz.
Tours to Japan, China, Korea, Indonesia, the USA and South America.
