An evening of the music of Wayne Horvitz featuring the Italian incarnation of his long-standing quartet “Sweeter Than the Day”, with special guests the Koehne Quartet.

Sweeter than the Day will perform one set, and then joined for a second set by Koehne Quartet, with original string arrangements by the composer. In addition, The Koehne Quartet will perform movement IV of Horvitz’s “Mountain Language” a composition originally recorded by Koehne for Horvitz’s “Whispers, Hymns and a Murmur”, released in 2006, on the Tzadik label.

This band features 3 of Italy’s finest players, Zeno de Rossi, Danillo Gallo and Francesco Bigoni, all of whom have performed throughout the world with a wide variety of artists including Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, Enrico Rava , Steven Bernstein, Sam Amidon, and Vinicio Capossela among others.

Formed in 1999, Sweeter Than the Day began simply as the acoustic incarnation of Zony Mash with Andy Roth, Tim Young and Keith Lowe.  The band played weekly shows at Seattle's Baltic Room, curated by Reggie Watts, and quickly became Wayne Horvitz’s first piano based ensemble in over 10 years. Despite the shared personnel, the ensemble is quite distinct from the electric Zony Mash, and the repertoire is entirely different.  The band has toured throughout the US, Canada and Europe and made 3 CDs for the Songlines label.
