Portrait Sylvia Bruckner w/ Birgitta Flick & Christa Stöffelbauer
Sylvia Bruckner: piano
Birgitta Flick: tenor saxophone
Christa Stöffelbauer: dance
The three artists share an interest in collaboratively creating a space that unfolds from the direct interplay of music and dance, exploring, transforming and researching new possibilities for interaction. Together they search for sonic relations, for subtle details that manifest themselves between instrument and body, between music and movement, allowing a space to emerge in the moment of creation that is specific, alive and in a constant state of change. This evening is an invitation to immerse yourself in this ever new, open dimension of music, dance and improvisation.
Sylvia Bruckner is one of the best-known Austrian jazz pianists and has developed her own specific style and sound with her compositions and improvisations. Her works range from new music and free jazz to experimental rock music, which she realises solo as well as with instrumental and vocal partners. She is a prominent personality in the European improvised music scene. She has performed with renowned musicians such as John Butcher, Hamid Drake, Joëlle Léandre, Tony Buck, Susanna Gartmayer, Didi Kern, Martin Siewert, and Willi Kellers, among many others. In addition to these collaborations, she also enjoys performing solo concerts, where she can display the abundance of her imagination, inventiveness, and her wide range of expression.
Birgitta Flick lives as a freelance saxophonist and composer in Berlin. Trained at the Jazz Institute Berlin (UdK/HfM ‘Hanns Eisler’) and at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm as well as through private studies with Connie Crothers in New York City, she works internationally with her own ensembles in Berlin, Stockholm and New York City and has composed for ensembles such as LUX:NM (DE), the vocal ensemble VoNo (SE) and the youth choir of the Berlin State Opera. Her work has been supported by the Berlin Senate, the Initiative Musik gGmbH and the JazzBaltica Prize, among others, and is documented by an extensive discography and a choral edition published by the Swedish Gehrmans Musikförlag. She is a doctoral candidate in the field of artistic research at the Artistic Research Centre of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Christa Stöffelbauer is a dancer, performer, dance facilitator based in Vienna and produces dance performances in collaboration with artists from various disciplines. She studied contemporary stage dance at Sozo Visions in Motion in Kassel, completed a movement pedagogy degree (IGRC)® and a BA in social work at the FH Campus Vienna. She works internationally with Instant Composition in the context of dance & music performance works in theatre spaces and site-specific works in urban spaces. Her interest is in the potential of collaborative composition and the infinite expression of the dancing body in the moment in relation to time, sound, space and audience as well as in creating spaces where this artistic exchange is possible. She has danced in works that have been shared at Gallus Theater Frankfurt, Kulturhaus Dock 4 Kassel, documenta Halle, Kasseler Dokfest, Das LOT Vienna, Kultursommer Vienna, Ljubljana City Museum, IMMEDIATUS BIENNALE Brno, WUK Vienna among others.
