With Encore, the Jazz Orchestra Vorarlberg presents a special program to conclude the stage band season – an encore in the best sense of the word: fresh, chamber music-like, and at the same time experimental.
In this program, the JOV embeds a string quartet into the orchestra, opening up its sound world in a differentiated, finely nuanced direction. The orchestra's otherwise powerful brass section takes a step back in favor of a somewhat reduced ensemble, creating new, intimate sound spaces in which the strings and jazz ensemble meet on equal terms.
The compositions come from the extended ranks of the orchestra itself – Martin Eberle, Phil Yaeger, Benny Omerzell Phoebe Violet, and Tobias Vedovelli are responsible for the pieces, which were conceived especially for this instrumentation. Although their styles differ, they are united by their shared experience with the JOV ensemble, which has been expanded to include string players. “Encore” is more than just a “second helping” to the finale of the Porgy & Bess Stageband. It is a musical summary, a subtle conclusion to a varied season full of timbres and musical curiosity, and the crowning glory of the nine previous concerts.
