The vocal ensemble GLAS is a colorful Viennese treat that brings the cultural diversity of this cosmopolitan city to life. The singers all live in Vienna and bring with them their roots from Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Iran, and Austria—a diversity that is immediately reflected in their sound.

The focus is on Eastern European polyphony. Melodically and rhythmically, the polyphonic songs of the Balkan region are among the most complex and impressive forms of expression in European vocal folklore. GLAS transports listeners into this special world of sound: from delicate, wistful songs from the Dalmatian coast to passionate Bosnian sevdalinkas to rousing popular tunes from Bulgaria and Macedonia in 7/8 time, but also with a detour to Slovenia and the music of the Roma.

A musical journey through the multifaceted Balkan region, carried by a great devotion to the rich tradition of polyphonic singing – a singing culture that has been recognized by UNESCO as “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”
