Matthieu Mazué 'Turn of Events' feat. Francisco Mela and Diego Hedez
A new project initiated in New York City by pianist Matthieu Mazué, “Turn of Events” brings together three musicians with strong and distinct musical visions, each widely recognized for their exceptional improvisational talents. Alongside Mazué is drummer Francisco Mela, a major figure on the contemporary jazz scene who has performed with McCoy Tyner and Kenny Barron, and trumpeter Diego Hedez, a regular collaborator of bassist William Parker.
Together, they explore new sonic territories within a deliberately bassless formation — an artistic choice that frees the piano from its traditionally codified harmonic role. This absence opens the way to a more transparent sound and a lighter, freer approach to the instrument. The dialogue between piano and drums becomes a central pillar — not only supporting the trumpet but also redefining the piano’s traditional role as accompanist. The drums, in turn, unfold with remarkable rhythmic freedom, shaping the contours of improvisation with flexibility and inventiveness.
