Where does a suite begin, and when does it dissolve?
With their album *ON*, the quartet CHUFFDRONE explores the idea of the suite as an open form: a sequence of pieces held together less by classical compositional logic than by sonic affinities, flows of energy, and collective decisions.
The project takes its starting point in the quartet’s shared practice of improvisation. Individual musical cells, textures, and gestures are taken up, transformed, and developed in various constellations. The result is a collaboratively crafted suite that moves fluidly back and forth between composition and improvisation, and whose internal dramaturgy only becomes apparent in the process of performance.
ON is an album that consistently builds upon the band’s collaborative character and its ongoing fusion of composition and improvisation, of the individual and the collective.
