Hailing from Romania, Mircea Stan made his Finnish invasion in the early 70’s. Originally the trombonist played with a dance band, but soon revealed his true colours as a passionate jazz blower.
Stan formed his first own group in 1972, and participated three years later in the founding of the UMO. In 1977 he was granted Finnish citizenship and ever since those days the brassman has molded the local jazz scene vividly with his innovative groups. In the early 80’s Mircea led a trombone quartet. Another critically acclaimed project was his duo with saxophonist Pentti Lahti. This duo is well documented on the albums „Friendship and Collaboration“ and „Don't Give Up“.
The trombone star has also been a sideman with bandleaders like Edward Vesala, Heikki Sarmanto and Seppo Paakkunainen regularly hiring him for their groups. Apart from performing, Stan is an important part of the Finnish jazz community as a teacher. He has given private lessons, coached up-and-coming musicians and taught at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory. Stan has studied classical music in Bucharest from 1958 to 1969, but as a jazzer he is self-taught.
In the 90’s Stan has kept his profile as high as ever both as a musician and a composer. His sextet has featured the talents of his countryman pianist Marian Petrescu, another Roumanian now making waves in the Finnish jazz pool. Mircea’s tunes have been described as modern hard bop while his composition style is likened to that of Adderley and Blakey. In 1992 Stan was one of the arrangers of the first ever Romanian jazz festival in the country’s capital Bucharest. (Petri Silas)
