Astor Piazzolla, one of the greatest composers of the last century and godfather of „Tango Nuevo“ fed (on) both ends by taking the rhythmic elements from African-American music and the counterpoint from European music (even the cantabile from the Italian opera). The result was inspirational, reciprocal and showed a lot of feeling, sweetness and passion in Piazzolla’s new music style.
The Nuevo Tango Ensamble, a quintet started by Pasquale Stafano and Gianno Iorio, reflecting the warm and sensual pieces of the great Argentinean composer, is one of the best European ensembles playing and interpreting Piazzolla’s music, as judged by international critics. The ensemble is able to deliver all the energy and the precious technical and dynamical exclusivness of this music, with a very jazzy facet. The CD entitled „Astor’s Mood“, the first record by the Nuevo Tango Ensamble from November 2001, features a great Argentinean bandoneon player, Gustavo Toker, as a special guest. From January 2004 on, the ensemble, then a trio, has begun the collaboration with the saxophonist Javier Girotto, one of the greatest interpreters of both jazz and Argentinean tango. Together they offer an original 'review' of Piazzolla’s tango, resulting in a music in which jazz and tango melt together. A common attitude towards accepting different musical experiences, presents that „life style“, that Astor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo stands for. (Pressetext)
