Stafford James macht sich seit nunmehr 30 Jahren einen Namen als herausragender Solobassist. Bereits in jungen Jahren wurde er von bedeutenden Musikern unterstützt, wie Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner und sein Mentor, die Basslegende Charles Mingus. „I will always appreciate the way he approached me as a young musician trying to get out of the bucket and find my own direction“. Stafford James hat bereits mit Albert Ayler (Music is the Healing Force), Dexter Gordon (u.a. Home Coming), John Scofield, Jimmy Heath, Pharoah Sanders und neun Alben mit dem mittlerweile verstorbenen Trompeter Woody Shaw aufgenommen. 1988 rief er das Stafford James String Project mit der Vision ins Leben, dem Bass seinen Platz als dominantes Melodieinstrument zu sichern. Für alle Variationen an Streichinstrumenten komponiert Stafford James die Stücke selbst, und haucht dem Projekt somit Leben ein. Stafford James als streichender Solobassist wird von einem zweiten Bassisten als Rhythmusgeber, zwei Violinen, einer Bratsche, einem Cello und einem Schlagzeug unterstützt. (Pressetext)
