Palmieri, who was born in Spanish Harlem, New York City, on December 15, 1936, grew up on 112th Street, just two blocks from the home of that other giant of Latin jazz, Tito Puente, who was one of his great idols.
Palmieri comes from a Puerto Rican family and owes his Italian name to the fact that his great-grandfather was born in Florence, Italy, and emigrated to Puerto Rico in the early 19th century.
Over the past five decades Eddie Palmieri has established himself as one of the great icons of Latin jazz music, earning himself such titles as The Sun Of Latin Music, The Wild Man Of Salsa and The Latin Jazz Messenger. To date, Eddie has made 36 albums, has received nine Grammy Awards and has more than 200 compositions to his credit.
Eddie Palmieri's Afro-Caribbean Jazz All Stars is one of Americas hottest Latin jazz and salsa bands. As the British magazine Crescendo has noted: “Eddie Palmieri produces an explosive combination of salsa and jazz which generates tremendous excitement and enthusiasm wherever the band plays.”
