Winter of 2013 will see the beginning of a new powerful trio consisting of Peter Brötzmann, Melvin Gibbs and Paal Nilssen-Love. The trio is performing for the first time together in Vienna on the 19th of February at Porgy & Bess and in Wels on the 20th of February at Schl8hof.
Brötzmann and Nilssen-Love go back to 1998 when they played together for the first time in Oslo. Since then the two of them have established several groups and collaborated in many many settings, such as The Chicago Tentet, Hairy Bones, Ada trio, and as duo, in trios with Michiyo Yagi, Akira Sakata, Jim O´Rourke etc etc etc.
Now´s the time for a new trio! Melvin Gibbs got in touch with Paal not so long ago and they agreed on finding space for some work. First time they played together in August 2012 showed that there was great potential in this rhythm section. Gibbs comes from an array of quite "heavy" musicians, such as Shannon Jackson and Arto Lindsay to mention a few. With quite a unique sound from his electric bass and electronics, he will push the trios music in new directions and will see Brötzmann and Nilssen-Love finding new ways to lead the music and improvisation.

These two concerts are also happening in connection with the release of a 5 CD box set with recordings from the Unlimited festival in Wels which was curated by Peter Brötzmann in 2011. So, watch out for that one as well! (Paal Nilssen-Love)

Man erinnert sich an Konzerte in der Jazzgalerie Nickelsdorf, da spielte Peter Brötzmann, wie er eben so spielt, also insistent und energisch. Und es begab sich, dass der eine oder andere US-Kollege, der sich auf der Bühne eingefunden hatte, angesichts von so viel Expression quasi kapitulierend das Spielfeld räumte. Man muss eben auch bei Sessionsituationen damit rechnen, dass Brötzmann er selbst bleibt. Tatsächlich ist der Mann aus Remscheid (Jahrgang 1941) schon seit einigen Jahrzehnten ungebrochen er selbst. Und das heißt: Jene aus den USA kommende Spielweise des Free Jazz, bei der alle melodischen, tonal-harmonischen, rhythmischen und formalen Regeln zugunsten eines spontanen, zumeist expressiven Ausdrucks zurücktraten, hat in Brötzmann einen fulminanten, konsequenten europäischen Vertreter mit gehörigem Eigenprofil gefunden. Es gibt in der Szene auch einen Begriff, der diese Art des Spielens einfängt - "brötzen" nämlich. (...) (Ljubisa Tosic)
